2023 Auditions!

We are very happy to announce our 2nd Annual Syracuse Youth Chorus Auditions!

It has been a wonderful first year of music making with some really brave and singers and their families, and we can’t wait to meet you and hopefully bring you along for the 2023-2024 season!

Please use the link at the bottom of the page to fill out the google form to sign up for a virtual audition.

Who is eligible to audition?

-Grades 3-10(starting 2023-2024 academic year)

-Treble Voices - Voices that are high, or unchanged. We look forward to growing our choir to include changed voices in the coming years!

For auditions, students should prepare a short song to sing. Folk songs, hymns, patriotic songs, classical art songs, or other classical music pieces are encouraged. Please no pop music or musical theater.

Below is a list of possible options:

O Music(sheet music and recording available upon request)

My Country Tis of Thee

This Land Is Your Land

Take Me Out To the Ball Game

Or even… Happy Birthday!

We will also asses musical skill with an age appropriate:

-Melodic Memory exercise

-Basic rhythm reading exercise

We are looking to hear your best sound, and are not expecting perfection!

There will be two choirs next year. One for older and more experienced choristers, and one for younger less experienced choristers. Our goal is to make scheduling and rehearsals as easy as possible for families, but want to give the best experience for all interested parties. We will be performing some very difficult works this year, and it is important to meet students where they are.

More information about the two choirs will be given at auditions in June, but if you have any specific questions please feel free to reach out!

What will the weekly time commitment be for SYC?

The time commitment per week will be one rehearsal a week. There will also be at least 1 concert per semester. For each of those concerts we will have a dress rehearsal beforehand.

What are the outside requirements to be in the choir?

1. You must participate in your school’s choral program and be in good standing. Your choral education does not stop at our door, and we expect and encourage you to go out and be the leaders of your school’s choral program.

  • If your school does not have a choir, or you are homeschooled, we will of course make other arrangements. This is partly why we ask what school you go to.

2. Unless extenuating circumstances arise, rehearsals are mandatory! We do not have much time to get our repertoire learned and rehearsed. To miss even one rehearsal you undermine the choir’s performance. We will be working on a varied and challenging repertoire, and all hands must be on deck so that we can strive towards the excellence that is in all of us. You must attend all rehearsals for the good of the group.

Can parents volunteer?

Yes of course! We will need lots of help with logistics, especially making sure singers get safely to their parents/guardians every week. Other examples are dress rehearsal/concert chaperones, concert ushers etc. We will be sending out an inquiry to sign up to volunteer, but in the meantime, please feel free to reach out over email: info@syracuseyouthchorus.org

What is the cost to enroll in SYC?

We want to make this experience available to all students. For the 2023-2024 season, we are working to bring this opportunity to as many students as possible, and will be assessing our costs from the first year. We are also working to find grants to offset the cost of running the choir, so that we can have more low-to-no cost scholarships available. We will be actively working on this, and will be sure to update this FAQ sheet with any developments.
